Which Nursing Degree Path Will You Choose?

At Indian Hills Community College, our state-approved nursing program is considered a “ladder program.” The curriculum of the Practical Nursing (LPN) program is considered (Level I) of the Nursing Program. This makes it easy for students who have completed the Practical Nursing Program to continue seamlessly into the Associate Degree Nursing Program (RN).


Practical Nursing


The Practical Nursing Program is a 4-term program that will prepare you with life-saving knowledge, technical skills, and hands-on experience you need to pass the National Council Licensure Exam-PN (NCLEX-PN) to become a Licensed Practical Nurse.

Once you finish the 4-term Practical Nursing Program at Indian Hills, you can seamlessly transition into the 2nd level Associate Degree Nursing Program to complete your Registered Nurse (RN) training and in only three more terms graduate with your Associate Degree in Nursing; or you can stop after the 4-term LPN year and practice as an LPN in a variety of settings.

All students are required to complete a 75-hour CNA course and successfully pass the written and skills examination for the State of Iowa. Students will need to submit their Iowa Direct Care Registry CNA card as a part of the admissions process.

Nursing (Associate)

Associate of Applied Science

Our new concept-based nursing curriculum allows students to complete the Associate Degree in Nursing (RN) Program in a total of 7 terms.  After completion of the Practical Nursing Program (Level 1), you may decide to attend three more terms to graduate with your Associate Degree in Nursing and become a Registered Nurse (RN) after passing the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN).  This degree will allow you the opportunity to go further in your career and open doors to many new opportunities to practice as a professional nurse in a variety of health care settings.

All students are required to complete CNA training and successfully pass the written and skills examination for the State of Iowa. Students will need to submit their Iowa Direct Care Registry CNA card as a part of the admissions process.

Nursing Simulation Lab

Our simulation lab is one to be admired!  In our state-of-the-art nursing simulation lab you will gain the confidence, skills, and abilities needed to go into the clinical settings and practice your nursing skills.  The Nursing Programs at Indian HIlls Community College utilize our simulation lab for up to 50% of our clinical hours.


Transfer your AA Degree


The University of Iowa-Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN)

Indian Hills Community College is happy to announce an articulation agreement with the University of Iowa School of Nursing which is called “RN to BSN 3 + 1”.  This agreement provides a wonderful opportunity for qualifying IHCC nursing students to seamlessly transfer IHCC credits to the University of Iowa, where they can complete their complete their Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) in approximately one year following graduation from IHCC.  These BSN courses can be completed entirely online while students are working in the field of nursing.  Students can also complete many of the required courses here at IHCC resulting in a significant decrease in cost.  Please contact the nursing department for more information regarding this opportunity.  That’s what we call Life.
