Exploring Careers

If you're curious about a particular academic program or career field, there are many opportunities to dive deeper and determine if it aligns with your interests and goals. Whether through research, informational interviews, or job shadows, you can gain a clearer understanding of what the field involves and whether it's the right fit for you.

Informational Interviews

An informational interview is an informal conversation with an industry professional in a career field that interests you. It is a great opportunity to learn more about what it is like to work in the field and to ask questions that can help determine if this may be a good career path for you.

Career Fairs

Attending a career fair offers many benefits, including the opportunity to network with recruiters and hiring managers from multiple companies, giving you exposure to a variety of industries and job roles. The professionals you meet can provide real-time feedback on your resume and how you present yourself, helping you refine your approach for future interviews. Career fairs also increase your visibility with employers, improving your chance of being remembered for upcoming opportunities. Additionally, they offer insights into industry trends and in-demand skills, as well as the potential for immediate interviews, all while building your confidence as you navigate the job search process.

Career Services hosts the Southern Iowa Career Fair every March and sometimes offers other fairs throughout the year. Watch for news of upcoming career fairs on WIN and on bulletin boards around campus, or check out the Southern Iowa Career Fair page for information on the next event.

Industry Tours

Touring a business lets you get a firsthand glimpse at the work they do and the job opportunities available, as well as the workplace culture. This can be another way to help you decide if this might be an industry you want to work in and whether that business might be a good potential employer for you.

Job Shadows

A step further than a tour, job shadows involve observing an employee as they go about their daily work and asking questions to get a better understanding of what they do, how they do it, and the work environment in which they operate. During a job shadow, you can gain insight into the tools, systems, and processes used on the job, as well as the culture, pace, and dynamics of the workplace. Job shadows have a longer duration than a tour and can last anywhere from half a day to several days, allowing you to immerse yourself in the work and overall atmosphere of the organization.
