Once you choose an academic program, work-based learning is a fantastic way to gain real-world experience while you’re in college to prepare you for your future career.
Internship
An internship is a short-term work experience that applies concepts and techniques learned in the classroom. The goal of an internship is to gain skills and experience in your career field while working for a business and being supervised by an industry professional. In addition to hands-on experience, internships often provide opportunities for mentoring, where you can receive guidance, feedback, and career advice from experienced professionals in the field. Completing an internship can also help you confirm whether your chosen career field is ultimately right for you, while building valuable connections and professional relationships.
Some programs at Indian Hills require internships, but students can also choose to do internships voluntarily and receive college credit even if their program does not require one.
Internships can be paid or unpaid and usually take place over a 12-week term, though they can be longer or shorter in some cases.
Apprenticeships
An apprenticeship is a long-term training program in which you learn the skills needed for a particular occupation while taking educational courses at the same time. Apprenticeships are most common in skilled trades such as electrical, construction, or industrial maintenance, although more industries are starting to offer apprenticeship options.
Apprenticeships are typically paid opportunities lasting one year or more.
