Byte Jam

Byte Jam is a team-based competition, with each team working on its own version around a central theme, with area schools competing against one another. Although students will be working from their own site, they won’t be doing it alone! Indian Hills Software Development Students will be able to respond to any questions that the teams may have via email at [email protected].

Students can ask for help with any aspect of creating the mobile app or website application, from technical coding questions, to design issues, and anything in between. There are no limits on team size or the number of teams that a school may have.

Diversity Conference

Diversity is a term that many people only associate with race and gender; however, it goes far beyond that. The concept of diversity itself represents a broad range of characteristics that can include, but are not limited to: age, race, creed, color, gender, gender identity/expression, sexual orientation, religion, disability, lifestyle, background, intellect, language, political views, and socio–economic status.

The diverse world that we live in today encompasses a wide range of cultures, ethnicities, values, and beliefs — which makes each and every individual unique. Understanding the definition of diversity allows people to recognize their own individual differences, and thus explore these differences in a positive and enlightening way. By doing this, we can welcome and celebrate these dimensions of diversity that each individual represents.

Educators in the Workplace

This unique workshop, offered through a collaboration between local economic developers (Opportunity2 ) and Indian Hills Community College, provides educators with tools to assure that K-12 students are being taught the essential knowledge and skills as well as guidance to prepare them for the workplace of today and tomorrow. Participants will gain exposure to diverse workplaces in the region, meet industry leaders, and develop an understanding of current and future workforce trends and job-seeking skills needed.   As a participant, you will experience four days of tours and presentations at area businesses and industries, focusing on the future content of technology and the needs of the changing workforce.  K-12 teachers, counselors and administrators are encouraged to attend.

FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) Regional Competition

The competition provides a fun way for students to begin thinking about careers in exciting fields such as engineering, robotics, and technology. Using LEGO® MINDSTORMS®, the children (ages 9-14) work together to create an innovative solution to a problem by conducting research, then building and programming an autonomous robot to score points on a thematic playing surface.

Opportunites, like this, for girls and boys to be introduced to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) at an early age, and to develop their interests and skills in these areas, are critical to the success of our children and our nation in the current and future global economy. Help the next generation get off to a great start!
